”, el cual fue editado por La Revista Cañasanta hace unas ediciones atrás. Les adelanto que, Iliana Matos es, hoy por hoy, una de las grandes intérpretes de la guitarra a nivel mundial.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) ¿Como fueron tus inicios en la guitarra?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffffcc;"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Pues bastante peculiar. Cuando tenía 9 años, comencé a asistir a clases particulares con una instructora de Arte, Bárbara Martínez Brito, que había hecho una especie de academia privada en su casa. Allí recibí mis primeras lecciones de solfeo, piano y guitarra. “Barbarita”, así la llamábamos, era una profesora espectacular. Me enseñó 3 acordes en la guitarra y con eso aprendí mi primera canción: “¿Por qué te vas?”, cantada por la británica Jeannette y original del compositor español José Luis Perales, la cual en muy poquito tiempo después tocaba en un grupo musical con otros niños. Esta ha sido una experiencia imborrable en mi vida musical. ¡Aún recuerdo esa canción! (Risas)&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) ¿A que edad comienzas a dar tus primeros conciertos?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-A los 10 años, toqué mi primer concierto como miembro del grupo musical infantil “Los EVEDEJER”, en el acto de inauguración de la Casa de la Cultura de Jamaica, en Guantánamo el 25 de julio de 1978.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3) ¿Existió algún otro instrumento que te motivara antes de convertirte en la gran intérprete que eres hoy?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Como te dije antes, comencé a aprender el piano y la guitarra a la vez, y francamente, prefería el piano. Sin embargo, cuando hice las pruebas de ingreso en el Conservatorio de Música de Guantánamo, tuve que escoger la guitarra; ya que el piano estaba clasificado dentro de lo que se llamaba en Cuba “Carreras Largas” para la cual exigían tener 7 años. Así que no me quedó otro remedio que escoger la guitarra que pertenecía a las “Carreras Cortas”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4) ¿Cuáles o quiénes han sido tus principales fuentes de inspiración?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-¡Muchos y diversos! En mis comienzos, la música de los 70. Posteriormente, a los 18 años, me movía entre dos grandes pasiones: Los Clásicos Rusos: Tchaikovski, Rachmaninov... y la Bossa Nova brasileña: Elis Regina, Tom Jobim... En lo que se refiere concretamente a la guitarra, a los 15 años me marcó profundamente Manuel Barrueco, con su disco de los estudios de Heitor Villalobos. A los 20 años, el guitarrista británico David Russell y los Hermanos Assad, se convirtieron en mi punto de referencia.Por otro lado, tengo que citar a mi Maestro en la Escuela Nacional de Arte, José Ángel Pérez Puente, que con sus clases dio un vuelco a mi mundo musical y me hizo conocer la música antigua y la contemporánea. Esto fue muy edificante para mí porque mi repertorio hasta entonces era bastante limitado.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5) ¿Por qué decides grabar un disco con la música de Eduardo Martín?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-“Angels in the street” es el resultado de un largo proceso que comenzó en el año 1992 cuando me fui de Cuba. Desde entonces, he tocado en 4 continentes y en un inicio solo tocaba repertorio clásico, de repente el público, en cada concierto, se me acercaba y me preguntaba por qué yo no tocaba música cubana?Decidí entonces probar con algunas piezas del Maestro Ñico Rojas. ¡Para mi sorpresa, comprobé el entusiasmo que el público mostraba hacia esa música llena de “filin habanero”!Poco a poco fui haciendo un repertorio de Música Cubana: en el 2001, encontré a Eduardo (Martín) en Barcelona y, desde ese momento, comencé a tocar su música. Nuevamente, tuve la sorpresa de comprobar que, dentro del repertorio de Música Cubana que hacía en aquellos años, la Música de Eduardo resaltaba de manera increíble. Lo mejor de todo, me descubrí disfrutando al tocar la guitarra como no lo hacía desde que tenía 15 años; y esto último hizo que me enamorara del proyecto de grabar un integral con su música.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6) ¿Hacia dónde diriges tu carrera en este momento, después de grabar el CD "Angels in the street"?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Por un lado, ¡y muy importante!, estoy preparando mi siguiente CD; también con el sello angelino GSP, donde Eduardo y yo grabaremos un disco a dúo con toda su música para este formato. El proyecto me tiene muy ilusionada, ya que la música de Eduardo, para dos guitarras, es de lo más divertido que he tocado con la guitarra clásica. Este verano él y yo comenzamos a hacer conciertos juntos y ha sido toda una experiencia.Por otro lado, tengo una oferta para hacer un nuevo disco con otro tipo de repertorio.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7) ¿A qué atribuyes el crecimiento de guitarristas y compositores procedentes de Cuba?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Creo que en general, el cubano es muy musical por naturaleza, y a esas aptitudes debemos sumarle, primero, la creación de las Casas de Cultura (donde yo me inicie), luego las Escuelas de Arte en cada provincia, el Instituto Superior de Arte y en una escala mucho mayor Los Festivales Internacionales de Guitarra de La Habana, que preside el Maestro Leo Brouwer y al que asisten, desde su creación, algunos de los más relevantes intérpretes. compositores y críticos de la guitarrística mundial. Cada solista ofrece Clases Magistrales; además de dar conciertos...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8) ¿Cómo ves el futuro de la guitarra en el mundo?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Complicado, como siempre, pero ahí estamos. Tal vez somos el único instrumento capaz de generar un evento para sí mismo en los cinco continentes. Solamente en España, hay más de 40 Festivales de Guitarra al año. Podrán decir que somos un ghetto, pero al menos somos autosuficientes, y eso tiene su mérito. La guitarra es un instrumento muy joven y poco a poco se va haciendo un sitio en el panorama musical. Y cada vez más se ven guitarristas de renombre, tocando con orquestas y directores de alcance mundial.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;9) ¿Pudieras relacionar algunos nombres de solistas cubanos (de la guitarra) en los últimos 25 años?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Uff… la lista es larga y no me gustaría dejar a ninguno fuera, pero en todos los géneros de la guitarrística contemporánea hay más de un solista cubano. Pensemos en el rock, el Jazz, la música clásica, los Combos, los conjuntos de música campesina y hasta en las orquestas de música bailable donde muchos son graduados de Escuelas de Arte, en los últimos 20 años.Cuatro ejemplos pudieran ser La Orquesta “Asonantas Habaneras”, el Dúo Confluencia, el Cuarteto de Rosa Matos y Laúdes de La Habana, por solo mencionar algunos.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10) ¿Hasta hoy cuál ha sido el punto más elevado de tu carrera como concertista?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Es una pregunta difícil, porque depende de tu escala de valores. Pero creo que éste es un momento inigualable en mi vida, ya que después de 7 meses en el mercado, “Angels in the street” esté recibiendo inmejorables críticas. Y sin menospreciar a ninguna de ellas, la de Clásica Guitar Magazine es muy estimulante, ya que es una de las revistas de guitarra clásica más respetadas y más antiguas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;11) ¿Consideras tú que debe existir una responsabilidad en las próximas generaciones de compositores e intérpretes cubanos?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Creo que lo tienen muy difícil. La situación del país es terrible y no permite más que sobrevivir, así que, ¿cómo puede un joven músico o compositor tomar responsabilidad en nada? No obstante, si mi memoria no me falla, hay más de cien guitarristas cubanos en diversas partes del mundo, que son una referencia sustancial al desarrollo del instrumento: Joaquín Clerch y Los Hermaños Tamayo, por ejemplo.En Cuba, hay muchos buenos intérpretes que siguen componiendo como Eduardo y solistas como su hija Gali, Cristina Pérez-Puente Madiedo (laureada en el Festival de La Habana), el “Guajiro Miranda” que enseña, toca, compone y trabaja con la cantautora &lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.canasanta.com/entrevistas/entrevistas/liuba-maria-un-angel-una-habanera-00001.html" target="_blank" included="null"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;Liuba Maria Hevia&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt; . Hay muchos otros que vienen saliendo de las Escuelas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;12) ¿Pudiéramos afirmar que la guitarra, en sus más diversos conceptos y estilos, sigue conquistando el gusto de los grandes auditorios?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;-Sí. Personalmente puedo decirte que, en el año 2000, hice una gira que me llevó a tocar dos conciertos de guitarra y orquesta, dentro de un programa de Música Española en Venezuela, Portugal y España. Hicimos alrededor de 10 conciertos y nos presentamos en 3 grandes auditorios. O público de Belo Horizonte poderá conferir espetáculo da cubana Iliana Matos e da brasileira Ledice De Felice, hoje, no teatro Dom Silvério. Abrindo o evento, a violonista paulista Ledice De Felice apresenta uma adaptação da obra "El Cimarrón", do alemão Hans-Werner Henze, baseada no relato autobiográfico de Esteban Montejo, um escravo fugido em Cuba. "É um espetáculo de uma única peça, um único repertório baseado no livro. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffffcc;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffffcc;"&gt;Montejo foi o último escravo cubano que lutou pela abolição da escravatura e tinha um questionamento político muito forte. Uma espécie de Zumbi dos Palmares cubano", diz Ledice. Vivendo na França há seis anos, onde desenvolve uma tese de doutorado na Universidade de Sorbonne, em Paris, Ledice apresenta um espetáculo não somente musical, mas que transita com a arte cênica. "A obra tem também uma pesquisa cênica, teatral. Exploro muito essa questão, ando pelo palco, faço algumas intervenções. Não fica somente naquela coisa de banquinho e violão. É música e linguagem contemporânea", adianta. Com apresentações no Brasil, Alemanha e França, a violonista aponta algumas importantes influências na sua formação musical. "Não posso deixar de citar o argentino Pablo Marquez, o escocês Paul Galbraith e o alemão Franz Healasz, que foi meu professor. Todos grandes mestres", coloca. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffffcc;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffffcc;"&gt;Após apresentação de Ledice, a violonista cubana Iliana Matos sobe ao palco do teatro, apresentando um repertório latino do seu mais recente trabalho, "Angeles en la Calle", dedicado a seu compatriota, o compositor Eduardo Martín. Residente, atualmente, em Barcelona, Iliana Matos é a única mulher a ter ganhado o importante concurso internacional "S.A.R. La Infanta Doña Cristina", organizado pela Fundação Jacinto Guerrero, da Espanha. O festival promove, ainda, palestras e oficinas com os músicos convidados do projeto. Amanhã, será realizada a oficina com pernambucano Nenéu Liberalquino, das 9h às 12h. As for Matos, she simply, radiantly shines, a virtuoso in service to the music. The result is a persuasive calling card for both Martin and herself. Needless to say, this sleeper of a disc should attract quite a following in the guitar world. Even non-guitar lovers will find immense delights." Sello GSP. 1030CD&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iliana Matos, intérprete de este disco, explica: “En el 2001, después de muchos años sin vernos, Eduardo y yo nos encontramos por casualidad en Barcelona. En los siguientes encuentros, Eduardo me dio a conocer su música, la cual era desconocida por mí en aquel momento. A partir de entonces, la fui incorporando en mis conciertos. El entusiasmo con que su música era recibida en muy diferentes países, me animó a emprender el reto de grabar un álbum dedicado íntegramente a su música. En el verano del 2004 pregunté a Eduardo si podría escribir una conga para guitarra? Él me contestó: ‘Hmmm…, no sé, déjame ver qué puedo hacer’. Las navidades de ese mismo año, recibí el mejor de los regalos: Ángeles en la calle. Quiero dar gracias a Eduardo por componer para mí y especialmente por haberme revelado los secretos de su música en las largas sesiones de trabajo que precedieron a la grabación de este CD”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eduardo Martín nos detalla el contenido:&lt;br /&gt;“Es de gran interés para un compositor, poder escuchar sus obras bien interpretadas. Al artista le acompaña siempre un duende creador, aún cuando interpreta la obra de otro, porque le da la vida y el espíritu que ésta necesita para llegar al público y poder ser entendida, que no es otra cosa que ser disfrutada. Iliana Matos es una artista dotada de una magnífica técnica. Posee un sonido claro y brillante, potente a la vez que íntimo, cosa que pone siempre al servicio de la expresión. Su buen sentido del ritmo le permite abordar estas obras con justa precisión y a la vez con toda la gracia y flexibilidad que exige cada momento. Como compositor me he sentido muy afortunado al escuchar este disco. Siento que en las manos de Iliana Matos mis piezas adquieren una dimensión superior.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En cinco líneas es una suite que hice para cinco amigos que quiero mucho. Personas excepcionales, de esas que la vida siempre nos pone en el camino y sólo a veces tenemos la luz que nos permite descubrirlas. Anunciación es la primera de esta serie. La escribí para Iliana Matos con entera libertad y gran ilusión, pues supe desde el principio que ella podría afrontar sin dificultades cualquier reto musical o técnico. Resaltan en la pieza ritmos y giros melódicos que nos transportan rápidamente a Sudamérica, pero no a un solo país de esta amplia región, sino más bien a un ámbito rico en mestizajes sonoros. Iluminado es una pieza de sabor cubano. En ella prevalecen síncopas características del son. La compuse para  mi gran amigo José Ignacio López, siempre tocado por las musas, de ahí su título. Profecía del agua y el viento, emparentada con el blues, no deja de ser meditativa a pesar de su estilo de impromptu. En la primera parte, el pulso riguroso permite a los silencios adquirir su verdadero sentido expresivo. La sonoridad se hace más intensa en la medida que avanza la pieza. La dediqué a Francisco Gamallo, que no cesa de estimular mis pensamientos musicales y retar mi voluntad.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La ausencia es una canción romántica, muy adecuada a la sensibilidad musical de Rosa Matos para quien fue compuesta. En ella están reflejados ciertos giros melódicos y armónicos propios del bolero, aunque su pulso es mucho más flexible. Ilusión y verdad está emparentada con ritmos afrocubanos, esencialmente cercanos a algunos toques de tambores batá. Cierto ambiente rock está siempre presente. Dedicada a Jorge Luís Zamora, no podría ser menos que una pieza de carácter vivo y alegre. De la rumba son está inspirada en una variante de la rumba cubana llamada guaguancó. Sin embargo, la obra es un son. La rumba y el son sustentan sus bases rítmicas en esquemas muy parecidos. Es una obra difícil, que pone a prueba la capacidad musical y técnica de cualquier guitarrista. Fue escrita por encargo para el 4e Concours International de Guitare Ville d'Antony 2003. Son del barrio es un típico son tradicional con sus coros, montuno y solos al estilo de los que hace cualquier conjunto sonero cubano. La primera parte, a modo de historia instrumental es mucho más melódica. Luego desarrolla variaciones a partir de un primero y segundo tema. Termina con un característico son montuno. Ángeles en la calle fue un encargo de Iliana para el presente disco. En ella los bajos de la guitarra asumen el rol del bombo, como patrón rítmico. El papel del cencerro, tan recurrente en la conga, ha sido resuelto con la utilización de arpegios. Sobre estas bases rítmicas se realiza el desarrollo temático de la obra. Canciones del calendario es una suite inspirada en los meses del año. Cada una de estas doce piezas tiene su carácter y espíritu propio. Sin embargo hay similitudes entre ellas: la prevalencia melódica, los giros armónicos que reafirman el sentido tonal y la evidente huella neorromántica, flotando en un mundo sonoro enriquecido por divergentes corrientes estilísticas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Para soñar contigo es una canción de cuna que escribí a fines de 2004, cuando Catalina D´Onia estaba por venir al mundo. La pensé como regalo para esta pequeña que esperaba una familia amiga. Es una pieza sencilla que podría  ser fácilmente cantada y acompañada por una guitarra, aunque aquí la presentamos en versión instrumental. Preludio, Son y Allegro tiene dos grandes fuentes que la nutren: por un lado la música popular cubana y por otro la obra de Bach, cuya influencia está presente de manera casi evidente en buena parte de mis composiciones. Divertimentos tropicales es una serie de tres piezas que integran elementos característicos del son, el bolero, el danzón y el chachachá. La riqueza rítmica que ofrecen estos géneros y variantes de la música cubana es enorme. Pienso que Inevitable, Chacumbele y Lobisón, reflejan el optimismo y amor a la vida siempre presentes en mi gran amigo Nico Rojas, al cual van dedicadas”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Originario de La Habana, Cuba (1956), el compositor, profesor y ejecutante de guitarra Eduardo Martín concluyó su formación profesional en Música en el Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba en 1985. Posteriormente se matriculó en los cursos de perfeccionamiento, así como en clases de historia de la música, morfología y análisis musical. Desde 1990 Martín realiza estudios sobre folklor musical cubano, hecho que ha influido de manera decisiva en su labor como compositor de música para guitarra. En ese mismo año fundó el dúo Confluencia, junto con el maestro Wilfrido Domínguez, con el que ha realizado diversas grabaciones discográficas. En 1991 fue el primer compositor latinoamericano laureado en el Concurso de Guitarra de Radio en París y, en 1999, fue seleccionado por la American Composer’s Orchestra de Nueva York como compositor delegado para el Festival Sonidos de las Américas. En este CD nos muestra un caudal amplio de ideas, sostenidas por elaboradas bases rítmicas, en un lenguaje que, sin romper con la estructura tradicional, lo actualiza con su ingenio repleto de originales hallazgos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iliana Martos culminó sus estudios musicales en el Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba en 1991, donde fue distinguida con el Diploma Especial al graduado más destacado en el trabajo artístico-creador. Aclamada por el ABC de Madrid, marcó historia al convertirse en la única mujer que ha ganado el Concurso Internacional de Guitarra S.A.R. La Infanta Doña Cristina, que organiza la fundación Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero, además de otros premios. Todas las críticas coinciden en las cualidades que arriba apunta Eduardo Martín y que confirmara en su día María  Luisa Anido: “Me has dejado admirada por tu maravilloso arte guitarrístico. The music, all written by the Cuban composer Eduardo Martin, whose name I only know from two tracks on the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet CD, ‘LAGQ Latiri’, is simply superb. Throughout the 64 minutes of music on this disc there are rhythmic complexities which boggle the mind, stunning harmonies and wonderfully crafted melodies.&lt;br /&gt;In Iliana Matos, Martin has the perfect interpreter for his works. She has been a prize-winner in ten international guitar competitions and made history when she became the only female to win the prestigious S.A.R. La Infanta Doña Cristina International Guitar Competition. Her technical abilities are second to none and she possesses a truly beautiful tone when required. She shows an instinctive insight into this music and gets to the heart of every piece with impeccable phrasing. MusicWeb International. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The review disc is interesting from a number of aspects but two in particular. All the music is from the pen of one composer: Cuban guitarist/composer Eduardo Martin. There are few modern composers for guitar who can maintain the attention of this reviewer through twenty-seven tracks of music constituting eight different compositions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eduardo Martin may be prolific and renowned as a guitarist, but it is quite evident from the liner-notes, the majority of which he wrote, that featured guitarist Iliana Matos is the artist the composer considers best equipped to play these compositions. The observation that ‘it takes one to know one’ is reflected in Martin’s comments: ‘She is a true artist, gifted with a magnificent technique. She possesses a clear and brilliant tone- while intimate and powerful - always used expressively. As the composer I feel very fortunate to listen to this album. I feel that in Iliana’s hands my pieces reach a higher level. The authenticity of her interpretations, energizes, renews and recreates them.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eduardo Martin was born in 1956. He studied guitar with Jesus Ortega and composition with Ángel Vázquez Millares and Alfredo Dieznieto, graduating from the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba in 1985&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a concert guitarist he has toured throughout Latin-America and Europe and his discography exceeds fifteen recordings. As a composer he has won numerous awards and commissions including Radio France International Competition and the American Composer’s Orchestra Festival. His works have been published in Europe, Cuba and the USA.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eduardo Martin’s compositions are strongly influenced by the music of his native Cuba, but he also provides insights into other important sources of influence. Preludio, Son y Allegro (2, 3, 4) has two major influences: popular music of Cuba and the works of J.S. Bach. It is from Bach’s Preludio, Fugue and Allegro for Lute (BWV 998) that Martin derived much of his inspiration for this composition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Written for Iliana Matos, the title track, Angels on the Street, was inspired by street musicians of different backgrounds, styles and cultures and in many parts of the world. ‘These musicians give their heart and soul in every performance without rigid formality nor compromises for whoever is listening - true Angels who make their living in this way daily.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To ensure the liner-notes by Eduardo Martin can be fully interpreted, a glossary of terms is included e.g. ‘Son’ (3) refers to a popular Cuban dance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are so many interesting and intriguing aspects of the music presented on this disc that a discrete review, dedicated exclusively to the music per se, would be justified.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iliana Matos graduated from the Instituto de Arte Superior de Cuba in 1991. Among her guitar teachers we find such illustrious names as: Francisco Rosa, Gabriel Estarellas, Miguel Bonachea, and Jesús Ortega. The list of those in whose master class she has participated includes: Leo Brouwer, David Russell, Sharon Isbin, Tania Chagnot, and Costas Cotsiolis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ms. Matos made history by becoming the only woman to win the prestigious ‘S.A.R La Infanta Doña Cristina’ International Guitar Competition. She is currently studying with Ricardo Gallen at the Extremadura University for the first Master of Music in Classical Guitar. Iliana also maintains an active concert career&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It has been noted that musicians often excel in interpretation of music from their mother country. The endorsements and accolades from Eduardo Martin are justified in every track of the review disc: compositions inspired by Cuban popular music, from the pen of a Cuban composer and played by a Cuban guitarist synergistically weave magic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The music is not easy to define and one hears elements of folk, jazz and classical; given the aforementioned sources of inspiration this is not surprising.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those familiar with jazz/hybrid guitarist Earl Klugh will hear echoes of his style in Inevitable (5) and Lobison (7).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Much of the music would be eminently suited to the sound track of a quality movie, and the last item, Para Sonar Contigo (26), reminds one of the Villa-Lobos composition, Sentimental Melody, written for the film Green Mansions. On my particular disc, track 23 (Octubre) has been worn out - a brief audition will explain why.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It should be noted that Iliana Matos’ superb interpretive skills are not limited to Cuban music. Her rendition of the Chaconne from Bach’s Suite for Solo Violin (BWV 1004) elicited the following observation: ‘ Her beautiful diction of the cantabile in the Andante section made history’ - El Mercantil Valenciano Castellón, 1996.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Iliana Matos exhibits high musicality, a very refined technique, and a strong sense of rhythm. Listen to the Cuban dance Son del Barrio (26) to hear how she embraces these rhythms, combining them with percussive sounds made by striking the body of the guitar. Her beautiful tone is complemented by an instrument from the hands of luthier Paco Santiago Marin. For aficionados who may be interested, on this recording Iliana chose to use Hannabach Silver-special High Tension, Set 815 HT nylon strings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is with reluctance that I describe the work of a current generation guitarist as magnificent because it leaves little latitude for the future but on this occasion there is no other synonym that is more appropriate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Regarding the future, one must recognise that fate and circumstance are not always kind to great artists. Con ellos, como en los tiempos en que los galeones desbordantes de riquezas emprendían su viaje de regreso, España gana y, a pesar de las circunstancias, Cuba y la creatividad de su gente se multiplica en otras latitudes.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#66cccc;"&gt;ROBERTO FANDIÑO&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;Nació en Matanzas, en 1929, y vive en Madrid desde 1968, año de su salida definitiva de Cuba. Desde muy joven se interesó en la cinematografía y participó activamente en el ámbito del teatro realizando escenografías para el teatro ADAD, el Patronato del Teatro y el Ballet de Alicia Alonso. Al mismo tiempo dirigió varias obras para la Academia Municipal de Arte Dramático, en Cuba.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Después del triunfo de la revolución de 1959 trabaja en el recién creado Instituto del Cine (ICAIC), recibe una beca del gobierno italiano para estudiar Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Roma y realiza sus primeras obras cinematográficas: documentales (como María Cervantes, en 1968), cortometrajes (Alfredo va a la playa, de 1963) y largometrajes (El bautizo, 1963).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En la década de los años 70, ya establecido en España, realiza dos largometrajes de ficción: María la Santa y La espuela (1976) y entre 1978 y 1979 siete capítulos de la serie televisiva El juglar y la reina, así como los cortos La mentira (1975); En el jardín oculto y el excelente documental sobre el Miami de principios de los años 80 Miami: encuentro de dos culturas (1981), hoy día una referencia para entender la impronta cubana y el desarrollo de esta ciudad.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fandiño además de conferencista y crítico cinematográfico organiza en estos momentos un ciclo de cine cubano en la Fundación Hispano-Cubana, de Madrid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Desempolva viejas películas y ofrece la sabiduría adquirida durantes tantos años de devoción por el cine a quienes se acercan a él para indagar sobre el séptimo arte y sobre una Cuba que tal vez no conocieron. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#66cccc;"&gt;ILIANA MATOS&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;Cubana de nacimiento y barcelonesa de adopción&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ileana Matos (La Habana, 1967) es guitarrista y la primera mujer que ha ganado el célebre concurso ''SAR la Infanta Doña Cristina'' (1996) que otorga la Fundación Guerrero. Entre los muchos primeros premios recibidos se incluyen el ''Francisco Tárrega'' (1996), el ''Andrés Segovia'', de la Ciudad de Linares (2001), el de Ciudad de Vélez-Málaga (2002), entre otros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Estudió guitarra en el Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana y su amplio repertorio incluye obras de Albéniz, Bach, Castelnuovo, Granados, Tárrega, Villa-Lobos, Vivaldi, entre otros, que ha tocado durante sus múltiples presentaciones en Francia, Alemania, E.U., Venezuela, Chile, Marruecos, Turquía, Egipto, Jordania, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Su febril actividad la ha llevado a fundar el Quinteto de la Villa y a estrenar obras de compositores como Tomás Marco, Flores Chaviano, Madais Andino, Zulema de la Cruz y Eduardo Morales. En Miami ha tocado tres veces y también ha realizado una gira por cuatro universidades norteamericanas. Además de su carrera como concertista se dedica a la enseñanza y la ejerce en el Conservatorio García Matos, de la ciudad de Plasencia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recientemente ha grabado el álbum Angels in the Street con el sello disquero Guitarra Solo Publications, de San Francisco, que dedica íntegramente a la música del compositor cubano Eduardo Martín.&lt;br /&gt;María Luisa Anido ''La gran dama de la guitarra'', tras oírle tocar exclamó: ¡Me siento orgullosa de saber que una mujer (y cubanita) llegara a tal grado de perfección!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#33ccff;"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#66cccc;"&gt;ALBERTO LAURO&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffff99;"&gt;Elogiado por la escritora cubana Dulce María Loynaz, a cuyo círculo literario perteneció, Alberto Lauro (Holguín, 1959) es un extraordinario poeta que reside en Madrid desde 1993. Graduado de Filología de la Universidad de La Habana, publicó, aún en Cuba, los poemarios Con la misma furia de la primavera (1987), Los tesoros del duende (1987) y Acuarelas (1990).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;En España publicó el excelente poemario Cuaderno de Antínoo (1994). También Parábolas y otros poemas (1977) y El errante (1994), todos premiados. Ejerce también el periodismo colaborando para el diario La Razón y resultó ganador de VI premio Odisea 2004 con su novela En brazos de Caín.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Culta y sensual, a la vez que ingeniosa y muy cuidada, su primera novela merecería, una crítica más enjundiosa. En ella, Adán, Eva, Caín y Abel viven en autarcía después de haberse negado a abandonar el Paraíso. Intrigas familiares, dudas, temores, poesía, sopesadas intertextualidades y abundante ingenio permiten descubrir una trama que destaca la innegable calidad y madurez de un narrador. La novela de Alberto Lauro sobreabunda justamente en aquello de lo que carecen no pocas: ideas, pensamiento. Composer Eduardo Martin, perhaps best known from the LAGQ's rendering of "Hasta Alicia Baila" and "La Trampa," proves not only his stewardship for Villa-Lobos' spirit, but for also truly drawing it into the 21st century with writing "Angels in the Street." The only limiting factor for a piece such as "Angels?" -- to find a performer who possesses the virtuosity able to handle the technical act of precisely lifting the notes from daunting page to fretboard, and to do it with a panache and sensitivity which disguises the difficulty as only subliminal. Such an artist is Iliana Matos. Matos has a long history of concert awards including first prizes in the Vila de L'Olleria, Ciudad de Vélez-Málaga, S.A.R. La Infanta Doña Cristina, and Manuel M. Ponce International Guitar Competitions. And though Matos is a dark horse, it's impossible while listening to "Angels" to believe that her name will not someday ring the same peal of recognition as does Bream and Williams. "Preludio" begins with the same slumbering but expectant legato lines of Villa-Lobos' Prelude No. 4 in E minor, and also like that piece explodes into surprising glissades of arpeggiations. "Anunciacion" (from Martin's "En Cinco Lineas") has the floating and ethereal quality of a Ralph Towner composition. Not surprisingly, since both composer and performer are Cuban, Latin influences are prominent on some pieces ("Inevitable," "Son," "Son de Barrio," De La Rumba Son") and will reward fans of Egberto Gismonti. She has received numerous awards for her interpretation of Spanish and Cuban music. The program continues with “Prelude Son y Allegro”with fast sound escapades and Matos is able to create an unique own sound. “Divertimentos Tropicales” with nice percussive elements addedto these brilliant pennings. “En Cinco Lineas” has a an intriguing setupwith an intimate yet challenging character. “Canciones del Calendario”is an unique project which illustrates the twelve months of the year,with the different seasonal nuances with a moving touch. The CD endswith “Para Sonar Contigo” an intimate and soothing piece with a flowingstructure. And, for all except Latin American listeners, the kind of collaboration represented here will be exotic. Is this "classical music?" Surely it is; both artists emerged from the world of conservatory training, and the music is notated and technically rigorous in ways that one associates with the classical tradition. Yet the notes by composer Eduardo Martín, except in a "Preludio, Son, y Allegro" specifically pointing toward Bach, speak of "a typical son," "a conga written for Iliana for this recording," "a romantic song." The beauty of this music is that in it, the distinction of classical and popular means very little: the resources of classical guitar are used in order to elaborate popular bases, and the classical and popular are woven into a language in which they are not easily dissociable. Most of the pieces are short, based on dances or brief melodies but filled in with complex passagework. The patterns are not only Cuban but range northward to the blues, southward to a variety of South American traditions in "Anunciación," and back in time to Bach in the marvelous "Preludio, Son, y Allegro." Guitarist Iliana Matos is a major unheralded talent, with clean articulation of rapid, hard passages and a winning way of drawing the listener in by slightly hanging back at a piece's beginning. A ne pas manquer la traditionnelle Nuit de la guitare du 23 juillet qui nous fera découvrir lors d’une même soirée plusieurs talents pour un voyage en guitare.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Enfin si les &lt;a class="spip_out" href="http://nuitsmusicalescieux.free.fr/"&gt;Nuits musicales de Cieux&lt;/a&gt; résonnent comme l’un des festivals de guitare les plus en vogue sur l’hexagone, il ne faut pas oublier le stage de flûte et guitare et les Master class qui auront lieu à la même période du festival.
